YouTube Kids home page
My role
My role in this project was to design the YouTube Kids website from scratch by creating a strategy for translating the YouTube Kids mobile app into a website while adapting the YouTube Kids app to align with the expectations for a web platform and slightly older demographic who can use a laptop / computer. I was the interaction designer on the project, and I came up with the concept, created wireframes, supported research, and produced production assets and redlines. I worked with a visual designer for the final illustration assets. I also lead the collaboration between the engineers, content team, visual designer, and copy writer to make sure we were all in line.
About the project
YouTube Kids is a separate stand alone app from YouTube on iOS, Android, and most smart TVs and is dedicated to bringing a safer YouTube experience to kids. The goal of this project is to expand the reach of YouTube Kids by creating a new web platform.
The impact
The YouTube Kids website launched in 2019. The YouTube Kids website was well received and featured in TechCrunch, CNET, USA Today, Fast Company, engadget, and KidScreen.

Kid research
To better understand how to translate the YouTube Kids app into a website, we ran a few studies with kids between the ages of 7 - 13. Initial studies included kids building their own YouTube Kids website on paper using paper components I provided and having them use other kid websites to understand their usability. Afterwards, we ran studies that included prototypes that incorporated these ideas until we landed on the final product.
Research with kids is a sensitive topic. For more information, please contact me.
